PG Diploma in Islamic Thought and Social Process

Thanshia Islamic Academy invites applications for one-year residential program of PG Diploma in Social Sciences and Islamic Thought for the academic year 2023-24. The course aims to educate a diverse body of students in order to prepare morally committed intellectuals and social leaders grounded both in Islamic scholarly tradition as well as critical social science stream. And it also aims to make them capable of critically engaging with the social currents and critical ideas shaping our society and culture.  

The Course wants to seek the possibility of Social Sciences and Humanities, cast in the mold of the Islamic Ethical Framework and contemporary social processes. It also aims to facilitate the understanding of major sociological debates and critical strands that emerged within social sciences and humanities in detail. By covering major debates within social science, critical social science and Islamic thought, the course envisages to enable students to seek the inter-connections and divergence of those emerging discourses with the mainstream notion of social sciences and humanities.

To achieve this goal the Institute incorporates a unique curriculum comprising Modern Sociological thought, the emerging critical strand within social science and Islamic Knowledge systems. The course will follow an interdisciplinary approach and will give an idea about plural ways of thinking on social processes. Moreover, it will help students to develop a critical understanding of existing knowledge practices and suggest innovative ideas for a better future and just world.

The curriculum will review major foundational ideas in Modern social science and Islamic Traditional Knowledge systems. Islamic Knowledge systems like Islamic Jurisprudence, Islamic Philosophy and Ethics will be taught to evolve a perspective on Islamic Understanding on Society and Social processes. After a comprehensive examination of foundational concepts, it will try to evolve a new dimension by analyzing the current socio-cultural-economic development. For that purpose, each course will divide into three modules: First Module will discuss the foundational ideas and its relevance. The second module introduces the critical approaches that emerged towards the existing concepts and the third module will seek the creative intervention of students and faculties to synthesize and produce inputs to the existing knowledge system. This module will be more participatory and enable students to develop their own positions and arguments considering the space and time (context) they have been engaging with.

Course Structure

This is a one-year residential course that begins in August 2023 ends in May 2024. The course has a comprehensive structure, with day-to-day lectures by different faculties, and extended workshops on various subjects in Social Sciences, Humanities and Islamic Studies. In addition, the course will provide intensive training in reading ability, analytical capacity, and writing skills. However, the course requires active participation from the students in terms of engaging with the materials and developing their academic writing skills. Most importantly, the course shall facilitate orientation programs intended to walk the students through the admission procedures at various foreign and central universities. English and Malayalam languages would be the medium of instruction. 

Facilities for the Admitted Students

The students would be offered accommodation and food at Vidhyarthi Bhavan, Calicut, along with a stipend. A special library, reading room and a digital classroom will also be set up at Vidhyarthi Bhavan.

Admission Process

  1. The entrance exam will be conducted in July 2023. 
  2. The candidates will be shortlisted for an interview. 

The selection would be based on the performance in both Exam and Interview.    Classes will commence on August 2023
